CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS COLD WAR MULTIPLAYER BREAKDOWN

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Multiplayer Breakdown

September 10, 2020

Activision has finally lifted the veil on Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s multiplayer, and it looks to offer the most intense combat scenarios yet.  Players will visit multiple locations across the world, each designed with an early 1980’s aesthetic.  There are new modes to tackle, countless customization options, and the most fluid character movement yet.  There’s no doubt that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is primed to usher in the next big thing in multiplayer gaming.

Maps

Any multiplayer game can live or die by its maps.  A well-crafted setting can be the key to keeping players engaged, building multiplayer memories for years to come.  The maps showcased for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War look to vary wildly in scope and setting, but all of them will pack in numerous hot spots for over-the-top action.  These 5 maps aren’t the only ones to be included in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, but they’re the ones Activision deemed fit to share.

Armada

The Armada map is based on Operation Azorian, with U.S. and Soviet forces navigating the North Atlantic Ocean to try and hunt down a prototype nuclear submarine.  Players will partake in battles across numerous ships by using zip lines that allow you to travel quickly between them.  If things get too heated on one of the big boats, snag yourself a gunboat to heat up the action closer to the water.

Miami

The Magic City turns cold when Perseus destroys a prison transport to set one of his allies free.  On this map, it’s Perseus’ hired DGI members against the CIA’s special forces.  Your Miami multiplayer action will take place in the cover of night, with just the glow of neon signage to light the way.  There’s no doubt this map is one of the slickest in the game, but it’s sure to be one of the trickiest as well.

Satellite

The reconnaissance satellite KH-9 has plummeted from the sky to find a new home in Angola, Central Africa.  Perseus is expected to be behind the crash landing, and his DGI team is once again looking to cause some trouble.  As the DGI tries to steal secrets from the satellite’s hardware, NATO’s MI6 Squadron is hot on their tail.  Work your way through the winding desert canyons and hop over satellite wreckage to take on your adversaries and secure the objective.

Crossroads

Deep in the Soviet wilderness of Uzbekistan, an MI6 Squadron is looking to get the jump on a Spetsnaz military convoy.  Get ready for some vehicular action as you hop aboard snowmobiles to dart across the frozen forest, but make sure you keep your head on a swivel.  Opposing forces could commandeer a tank to steamroll right over you, or blast you to kingdom come.

Moscow

Spetsnaz forces want to break into a CIA safe house and capture any remaining agents, along with sensitive data.  A second CIA-JSOC team has caught wind of the plans, and they’re rushing into Moscow to make sure their fellow agents remain safe.  The urban-focused fighting on this map not only takes place on the streets but in multiple massive buildings as well.  Snake your way through side streets, alleyways, and multi-level structures to defeat the other team and take home the win.

New Modes

It wouldn’t be Call of Duty without a mix of classic multiplayer modes and new options.  Longtime fans of the series will be happy to know that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is bringing back Team Deathmatch, Search & Destroy, Domination, and Kill Confirmed this time around.  As for new ways to play, Activision revealed three different objective-based matches that are sure to keep the action hot and heavy.

VIP Escort

This 6v6 mode will randomly select one player as the ‘Very Important Person’.  The team with the VIP has to protect that player at all costs, as they only have a kitted-out pistol, smoke grenade, and a UAV for team intel.  If the VIP reaches the extraction zone, that team wins a point.  If the other team manages to take out the VIP, the point goes up on their board.  Any non-VIP who dies is completely out until the next round, but a downed player can be revived by a teammate, or hold their ground in a Last Stand.

Fireteam

Fireteam ups the ante with a 40-player brawl, sending in 10 teams of four to duke it out.  The Fireteam mode is going to have different objectives within it, and these will be rotated in and out as the months roll on.  Activision teased a Fireteam game called Dirty Bomb but hasn’t shared specifics on what it entails just yet.  More information will be shared as we near the game’s launch.

Combined Arms

Get ready for a 12v12 battle in Combined Arms, and the action centers around vehicles.  The bigger maps of Combined Arms will offer up matches with tanks, helicopters, wave runners, snowmobiles, and more, depending on the setting.  At launch, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will include multiple Combined Arms Maps and Modes, including Domination.  This mode litters the map with multiple flags, and teams will have to capture these points and then hold onto them as the enemy pushes in.

Combat Enhanced

As you can see, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is going to include a massive collection of new maps and modes to keep you very busy.  Activision isn’t stopping there, though.  Their dev teams are making sure the core Call of Duty multiplayer experience is enhanced, tweaked, and evolved to perfection with a number of different changes over previous games.  These are the minute-to-minute gameplay features that’ll make your time online more enjoyable than ever before.

Improved sound

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will include a brand-new weapon sound engine, which brings immersion to a whole new level.  It’ll now be easier to tell what weapons enemies are shooting just by sound alone.  Along with that, spatial audio tweaks allow for a much better idea of where enemy gunfire is coming from.

Create-a-Class

The Create-a-Class system is getting a revamp as well.  The changes give operators a slot-based system, which offers primary, secondary, lethal, and tactical equipment, a Field Upgrade, and a set of Perks.

Field Upgrades

Looking to turn the tide of battle in an instant?  Field Upgrades, which you earn during the course of a match, give you an item to help your entire team or handicap the opposition for a set amount of time.

Wildcards

There’s been a change to Loadouts as well, as you can now use class-changing Wildcards to mix things up.  These Wildcards can give you eight attachments for a primary weapon, allow you to carry up to six Perks, double the number of lethal and tactical equipment given on spawn, or let you carry three Perks from any category.

Gunsmith

Call of Duty has been big on weapon customization for some time now, and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War takes it further than ever with the Gunsmith.  Visit the Gunsmith to revamp your primary and secondary weapons to your liking.  Primary weapons can be modified with a stunning 54 different attachments, which are spread out across eight different attachment points.  Each attach point will give you at least six different options, which should pave the way for some wildly different loadouts among operatives.

Scorestreaks

Scorestreaks are coming back for Black Ops Cold War, but with significant changes.  Now your earned score is kept through death, but you’ll still have to raise that tally via elite gameplay.  If you manage to rack up multiple kills before you’re taken out, you’ll earn Scorestreak bonuses that will help you to earn the higher-tier options.  Finally, Scorestreaks have considerable cooldowns now, which means players can’t constantly bombard the opposition with an unfair advantage.

Movement

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has even refined the movement of operators themselves.  You’ll be able to make your way about the battlefield easier than ever, thanks to the addition of four new features.  Sprint Take Off gives you a nice boost of speed at the start of your sprint, Sliding lets you take tactical cover and avoid gunfire by starting and ending in a crouch, Footstep control raises and lowers the sound of your footsteps depending on your speed, and Jumping has been given a much more realistic approach in terms of height and landing.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War doesn’t just continue the amazing multiplayer action of previous titles, it looks to innovate with changes both big and small.  Hopefully, all these elements will come together in an online experience that keeps everyone playing for months, if not years to come.  Better start preparing yourself now, because you can bet everyone else out there will be ready to mow down the competition come launch day!  Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War releases November 13th, 2020.
