Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty: Release Date, Price, DLC Updates, and More

CD Projekt Red has at long last announced the first details of Cyberpunk 2077’s first (and potentially only) expansion for the game.

Phantom Liberty, described as a ‘spy-thriller expansion’ for Cyberpunk 2077 is set in a new district of Night City and should provide plenty more content for fans eager to dive back into the world. Better still, Keanu Reeves is also on board to reprise his role as Johnny Silverhand.

If you’ve been keen to play more Cyberpunk outside of the existing campaign, then read on for everything you need to know about this meaty expansion.

14 September Update - Checked for the latest Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty news. All the most recent updates are found just below.

Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty Release Date

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty DLC expansion will release in 2023.

For the time being, there are no specifics on when in 2023 it will launch, or even a rough window or quarter to suggest when it might drop.

Now, why not enjoy the debut trailer in the meantime…

Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty New DLC Features

Based on everything CD Projekt Red said during the announcement it’s hard to tell precisely what new content or features will be added with the Phantom Liberty DLC, as most ‘new features’ were spoke of in a more general capacity.

As such, it’s hard to tell if the new features mentioned were coming more generally in the future, or specifically with the release of the Phantom Liberty DLC.

For now though, here’s a quick bullet point rundown of new features we know are on the horizon, as mentioned by game director Gabriel Amatangelo:

  • Complete overhaul of the police system
  • Vehicle-to-vehicle combat
  • New gameplay loop for melee
  • New actions in the perk tree
  • More Cyberware
  • (Phantom Liberty Specific) New cast of characters
  • (Phantom Liberty Specific) Expanding on a district in Night City
  • (Phantom Liberty Specific) Johnny Silverhand, aka Keanu Reeves, to return

Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty Price

You may have noticed that up until now we’ve avoided mentioning the price of this expansion. That’s because for the time being CD Projekt Red has avoided announcing a price for the expansion.

Although updates for the game have all been free so far, CDPR has long planned for a “paid expansion” for the game, so you won’t be getting Phantom Liberty for free.

Likewise, whilst we could look to The Witcher 3 expansion for some sort of hint – Witcher 3 Blood and Wine cost $19.99, and the Heart of Stone expansion cost $9.99 – it’s worth noting that these expansions were released back in 2015.

DLC costs have gone up, and in a world where Sony can charge $70 for the remake of The Last of Us Part 1, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Phantom Liberty over the $35 mark.

Is Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty The Only Expansion For The Game?

So far, it looks that way. A comment from the team on the teaser trailer paints the picture that Phantom Liberty could be the first and last expansion for the game.

As spotted by GamesRadar+, one fan of the game on YouTube commented: “I am quite intrigued by this expansion, I hope and in the future more will come out since this game has a lot of potential,”

but the team replied back to explain that “Phantom Liberty is the only planned expansion for Cyberpunk 2077.”

CDPR hinted at this back in May during a financial Q&A with investors. At the time the studio’s CEO suggested that the unnamed Cyberpunk 2077 expansion would be the final project to use CD Projekt’s in-house Red Engine before the studio moves to the Unreal Engine.

Prior to this, CDPR team members had previously suggested the game would have “expansions”. Equally, an investor Q&A translated by VGC in April 2020 also suggested there would be “at least” two expansions.

Arguably after a rough launch though, this could have changed.

Update 7 September - CD Projekt has provided a further statement on the situation to VGC which reads:

“We can confirm that the expansion in the works right now is the only planned expansion developed for Cyberpunk 2077. We’ve made the difficult decision to develop it only for PC, Stadia, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, as the scope for the expansion makes releasing it for previous-gen consoles technologically challenging without compromising player experience.”

Will Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty DLC Come To PS4 & Xbox?

No, Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty DLC expansion will not launch on PS4 or Xbox One consoles.

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the Phantom Liberty expansion will only be available for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC versions of Cyberpunk 2077.

This is in line with the decision by CDPR to cease all ‘major’ updates to the game on older-gen systems, beyond the Cyberpunk 2077 1.6 Patch which dropped Tuesday.

That’s everything you need to know about Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty, but as soon as we learn more about what’s coming, we’ll be sure to update this page.
