STREET FIGHTER 6: RELEASE DATE, LEAKS, CHARACTERS, TRAILERS, AND EVERYTHING WE KNOW SO FAR

Street Fighter 6: Release Date, Leaks, Characters, Trailers, and Everything We Know So Far

May 11, 2022

It’s official: Street Fighter 6 has finally been announced by Capcom with a short CGI trailer to get fans excited of what’s to come. Given that Street Fighter 5 launched back in 2016, there’s no doubt that fans are ready for a new chapter, with Xbox fans in particular hoping that they can also join the fight. But what else do we know about the next entry in arguably the greatest fighting game around? Read on, and we’ll explain everything you need to know about Capcom’s upcoming brawler.

Street Fighter 6 Trailer

So far the only trailer for Street Fighter 6 consists of a short teaser with Ryu and Luke squaring off for a fight. The teaser, which you can see below offers very few clues as to what fans can expect from the new game. We have some ideas, but we’ll save that for the story section further down. The only other detail of note is that it looks like Luke is charging up his Hard Shot V-skill in the trailer, which seems like a cool detail to include.

Street Fighter 6 Release Date

When is Street Fighter 6 coming out? Whilst Capcom has confirmed that the game exists they’ve stopped short of providing an official release date for Street Fighter 6 following their initial teaser.

That being said, the very fact that we have got a teaser trailer recently would suggest that a release date won’t be too far behind.

Most fans had expected the game to launch in 2021 when esports pros were informed that the Capcom Cup 2020 champion wouldn’t automatically qualify for the 2021 competition. Previously the champion would qualify so it was expected the change was due to a new Street Fighter release. However, in a tweet from leaker Dusk Golem it was suggested that the delays to the game may have been related to a change in director and Capcom affording the game an extra year in development.

When coupled with the COVID 19 pandemic and it’s not too surprising that the game has been a long time coming. We imagine we’ll see an official release date announced sometime later this year, perhaps with a view to the game launched in 2023.

Street Fighter 6 Story

Whilst Street Fighter 6 hasn’t always leaned into its story aspects as much as other fighting games, there is a story behind the game and the teaser trailer provides a few clues as to what fans can expect from the next game in the series.

For one, the fact that the trailer shows a more mature Ryu, sporting his ‘Hot Ryu’ beard look would suggest that the game takes place after the events of Street Fighter 5. Luke also looks arguably a little older than his youthful appearance in Street Fighter 5, although this could easily be a result of the visual style looking darker and more ‘painted’ than the cell-shaded look seen in SF5.

What Platforms Will Street Fighter 6 Be On?

You would have to assume that the new game is definitely coming to PlayStation 5 and quite possibly PS4 too. However is Street Fighter 6 coming to Xbox? Well it seems that is it. Following the major Capcom leak towards the end of 2020 an email was leaked that appeared to suggest that the game would be coming to Xbox Series X|S consoles. This is particularly significant given that Street Fighter 5 was previously not available on Xbox consoles, and launched as a PlayStation exclusive.

Street Fighter 6 Characters List

May 11 Update: It sounds as though Fei Long might never return to Street Fighter games in the future. Follow the link for more details.

When Street Fighter 5 launched it only had a modest 16 characters, with more added post-release through various seasons of content and at the time of writing the game has 45 characters on its roster. We would have to imagine Street Fighter 6 launches with considerably more than Street Fighter 5 did, which at the time was a fairly big criticism of the game.

For now, only two characters have been confirmed. First with Ryu and secondly with new character Luke, who was Street Fighter 5’s most recent new DLC addition to the game. The mixed-martial arts fighter might seem like an odd choice to reveal alongside Ryu, but Capcom did call him “a glimpse into the future” when he was revealed back in August 2021.

Though not confirmed you would have to suspect that some of the more staple Street Fighter favourites, such as Chun-Li, Blanka, Cammy and more would also return for the new outing. That being said, only time will tell and we’ll be sure to keep this list updated as more characters are revealed.

Street Fighter 6 Gameplay

For the time being Capcom have not revealed any gameplay footage for Street Fighter 6, but we would imagine they’ll have something to share later this Summer, when they have promised to reveal more about the game.

For the time being, we would suggest taking a look at the YouTube video below which gives fans a more comprehensive look at Luke and his moveset. We would imagine that a lot of casual players might have never seen Luke before, so this is a good refresher to introduce you to the latest fighter to join the series.
